Dear Friends of the Farm,
Wow—what a month it’s been here at Fore Saws Farm! Just before the 4th of July, we welcomed three tiny, ridiculously adorable Nigerian dwarf goats to the farm: Dolly, Lemon, and Hazel. We hustled to get their little goat haven move-in ready and were feeling pretty proud as we tucked them in for their first night.
Then, as we put our two-legged kids to bed and settled in for the evening, we heard an unexpected bleat. A loud one. Blake and I peeked out the window, and—wouldn’t you know—little Hazel had Houdini’d her way out in less than two hours flat and was gleefully sprinting around the backyard like she owned the place.
Cue two adults in pajamas, sprinting into the dark trying to herd a pint-sized goat (she’s about the size of a housecat) back into her pen. And of course, right as we got close—zip!—she darted right back through the electric fence like a tiny escape artist.
At that moment, Blake and I looked at each other and said, “Well, she’s definitely a Hazel.”
Hazel is named after my late Granny Hazel—one of the most fiercely capable, no-nonsense farm women I’ve ever known. She was all grit and heart, and I like to think she'd be proud of her namesake. Night one and our Hazel was already channeling Granny’s legendary determination.
Meanwhile, our Highland cows are teaching us daily lessons in patience, mud management, and cow-sized spa care. It’s been HOT and WET here in Asheville, which is… less than ideal for cows with long, luxurious coats. We’ve been rotating the girls between fields to avoid too much muck (hello, hoof rot prevention!), but Daphne? Oh, she lives for the mud. Girl’s basically a bovine piglet.
Unfortunately, she may have sprained an ankle in the field this week. We’re keeping a close eye on her and giving her a softer, drier space to recover. With both girls expecting calves soon, we’re especially cautious and leaning on gentle, holistic care. Any healing vibes or cow prayers you’d like to send Daphne’s way are more than welcome!
On a brighter note—we’re about to break ground on our new barn! Fingers crossed it’ll be ready in time for our Grand Opening. It’ll be a cozy, safe place for our mamas and their babies, and we can’t wait to show you the finished space.
Speaking of the Grand Opening, we hope you’ll help us spread the word to friends and family. More than anything, we want this farm to be a space where families can reconnect—with nature, animals, and each other. Life moves fast, and we’re hoping to offer a little pocket of peace and joy here in the Asheville hills.
Thank you for supporting our dream and being a part of this adventure with us. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone alongside you and your family.
With gratitude and goat-chasing memories,
Taylor
